California Happenings: **Save The Date(s)**
There are a few dates on the shunafishlydon e g g b e a t e r horizon you may want to take note of.
I know I do, so I won't forget.
Remember when I poked and prodded you to see the incredible documentary about Monterey Market, Eat At Bill's? It's playing on the big, (well, or mid-sized) screen now! Go! Eat popcorn! Sit in the dark!
You have no excuse! Well, unless of course you don't live anywhere near California...

It's that time of the year again for LITQUAKE !
Remember how I MC'd last year's The Tasting Course: Writers on Food & Wine?
THIS YEAR I AM GOING TO BE READING MY OWN WRITING!
At LITCRAWL. Check for details about this massive event by clicking here.
I will be reading, along with a few others on Saturday October 13, location TBA. Maybe by then I will be able to leave the restaurant before my 17 hours is up. heh.
Speaking of reading my own words~
I never did tell you about this, but better late than never, right?
Last year I was approached by a Canadian writer named Marusya Bociurkiw. You might know her as Hungry Girl or the person behind Recipes for Trouble. She asked if I could write a short blurb for her new book, Comfort Food For Breakups: The Memoir of a Hungry Girl. The catch was that I had to read the manuscript in about a week. And the next day I was to leave for Florida.
I thought I would speed read it to catch enough of a glimpse to write a blurb.
But something happened.
I was drawn in. Entranced, moved, intrigued. I was hungry for every page. So I stayed up every night until my eyes shut, reading the 170 page book. I thought and thought about what I could possibly say in a sentence or two that would sum up a book written from the heart. About romantic love. Familial love. Complicated love.
As you can see, by looking here, I did manage to come out with words.
On Sunday October 21st Marusya will be here to read from her hot red book. And she has asked me to read with her. I thought I might have the pleasure of reading a partial chapter of hers. But no. She, too, has asked me to read from my own work. Go figure.

So? Will I see you out? Should I wear a bowtie? Iron my clothes? Douse myself in Bay Rum?
See you soon...

I'm so confused... October 15 is a Monday :)
I think you must mean the 13th, which is sad because we have (very expensive) tickets to another event that night. :S

I will be reading at LitCrawl, too! I think...@ Good Vibrations, if all goes well.
Although you might want to edit the date -- that's Saturday, October 13, not 15.

Did I miss one of your events? Something about a bake sale to raise money for the hungry? In August?
Posted by:Elayne | 17 September 2007 at 06:30 PM
I've been meaning to plan something for the Lit Crawl, so you will have to let me know the details!
Maryusa just sent me her book to review for a journal...she spilled the beans a while ago you two were reading together. I should be able to make it to both events, what with all my free time these days.

::please excuse!:: I'm a bit tired these days...
the date of my Litcrawl date is now correct.
Elayne,
No, you missed nothing. I could not arrange a bake sale in August-- too busy, sorry.
Lindsey-- no doubt that you'll see me soon enough to know the details.

Oh, Shuna, your link to Recipes for Trouble has sent me spinning into yet another foodblog crush.... thanks.
I vote yes on the bow tie and do iron your shirt. Go light on the Bay Rum, though. I am sorry I'll miss it.

Bowtie: yes
Straw boater?
Pin stripes?
shiny shoes?
...optional
words: priceless. essential. always.

Thanks for the nudge to see Eat at Bill's. I would have missed it otherwise.
I saw it today and it was AMAZING. Inspiring and funny, full of local food superstars. Too bad there are so few like Bill.
