Three years.
ago
I didn't know what a blog was.
Three years ago
my life
as I had known it my whole life
up until then
was falling apart
and I would re-piece it together
as a small bird makes a nest for the first time.
years ago a friend invited me to her house to learn about this blogging thing.
I brought objects, a stamp pad & an alphabet
and
the hope that I would understand
the hope that I would get it,
even though it had only been
weeks before
that I bought my first computer.
Three
years ago I was afraid of using a digital camera.
Film for me please, no thank you technology.
And out of my stubborn
attitude
was born the apt title
e g g b e a t e r
!
O Eggbeater!
you are my silly friend, my life raft, my buoy, my companion, my passion, my pet, my alter ego, my child, my professor, my school, my ball & chain, my love, my affair, my play-partner, my best friend, my garden, my chalkboard, my Krylon can & my fat cap, my kitchen tool, my soapbox, my feather boa, my fake eyelashes, my hidden fancy underwear, my comrade-in-arms, my master, my ways to a means, my sketchpad, my darkroom, my monoprint, my paintbrush, my lifesaver, my cute swimsuit, my water-wings, my training wheels, my sandbox, my tiny red box of raisins, my go cart, my tree, my orchard, my farm, my puddle to splash as big as I want in, my leash, my keeper, my jailer, my muse, my truthteller, my mirror, my shadow, my echo, my heart,
my self.
and because of all of you
eggbeater is
yours too.
and because of all of you
eggbeater is our university
our home-school
our alternative education.
because of all of you
who read
and watch
and participate
and comment
and lurk
and
poke and prod and pinch and nibble and bite and scratch and fight and
talk and query
and dish and whisper
and invite yourself into my own private sandbox
and kiss me shamelessly
or give me a bear hug
or just a hard time...
I say 3 years is a great achievement.
So to you I thank.
Thank you for sticking by, for following along, for crashing the party, for being you, for allowing me room to grow, for reading even when it was hard, for supporting when I thought grief would swallow me, for waiting, for asking hard & easy questions, for baking, for eating seasonal fruit, for standing by my extreme nerdiness, for flirting, for saying when enough was enough, for coming for the poetry or the photos or the recipes or my odd sense of humour, for telling me where to go, for getting into my carry on while I've traveled, for putting up with me, for loving, liking, appreciating
eggbeater.
without you eggbeater would just be an old fashioned tool getting dusty in the out-of-date tool drawer!
Here's To The Old School Tool!
3 cheers for 3 years.
o eggbeater, i love you. happy blog birthday.

OMG!!!
I LOVE EGGBEATER TOO!!!
Happy Birthday Sweet Blog
You welcome us with open arms, and loving words, and a reflection of all things in life both savory and bittersweet.
You are a gift.
Of persimmons, and cream puffs, and sailor boys, Mermaids, and whispered secrets, tears of joy, frosting on the cake, eggbabies birthed in cast iron, and the laughter of a survivor.
You make me feel like it's my birthday too, every time I read you.
Love & Kisses!!!

Three is a good age and you are a mighty fine blogger. I can't think of anyone who does it better. I read you and admire your photos everyday that I can and I often times feel myself going off into a kind of meditation, you have that affect on me. You are a one and only Shuna, please keep blogging for years to come. Fondly, Kathryn

Congrats Shuna! Count me as a lurker who pops in from time to time for the food (the drama, not so much). Mmmmm chocolate frosting.
If you'd like to play stump the pastry chef, I've got a kitchen dilemma that I'd love to get your help with.
I'm stuck with 14 oz. (!) of homemade grapefruit marmalade that didn't gel properly. I didn't use enough pips so didn't get enough pectin. (Normally I make awesome marmalade that rivals June Taylor's, btw.) Anyway, I ended up overcooking the marmalade in the hopes that it would thicken, so now it's a bit caramelized with the consistency of honey. And it's got nice big long pieces of peel that have candied due to the longer cooking process.
My first thought as a home cook was to just throw the whole thing away, because I hate reminders of my failures. But then I realized that would NEVER happen in a pro kitchen.
So chef, any ideas for how I can incorporate my mistake into desserts? (besides drizzle on crepes :) )

Happy happy happy. Thank you, Shuna, for entertaining, challenging, and inspiring me with your words and photos these past three years. Your frankness and raw vulnerability never ceases to shake me out of my complacency. I'm especially grateful for your fearless openness about what it's like working (and blogging) as a pastry chef in the Bay Area. Thanks for letting us, as you so playfully put it, splash in Eggbeater's puddles.
