Last year, this time, this magazine, it was all about rhubarb. It was all about teaching the world how to cook rhubarb without demolishing its integrity. It was about osmotic reciprocity, the soul of the stalk, and an enigmatic philosophical question, "Is rhubarb fruit or vegetable?'
I thought it was my best article.
Until now.
This year, it's all about strawberries. Did you know that the red fleshy conical thing is not a fruit? Have you ever eaten the ancient and elusive musk strawberry? Do you want to know who grows the best strawberries in Northern California?
Pick up a copy of Edible San Francisco's Spring 2007 issue. These articles of mine, and countless other incredible writers, will not be found on line!
At $28 a year, a subscription is sure to offer you recipes, ideas, inspirations, mirth, and education. Not to mention some incredible photography our editor, the (in)famous Bruce Cole, is working hard to grace the pages with.
Not convinced yet?
Barbara Kingsolver is one of the authors in this issue's pages. !!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention Heidi Swanson, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the philosophical, humorous, well-read and well-spoken Andy Griffin of Mariquita Farms. Shuna fish Lydon is a mere pea tendril on a vine heavy with bursting, sweet English pea pods.
To that end, I give you this quote from my article in this season's Edible San Francisco, Memorable Fruit,
" The berry we eat today is an amalgamation, like many other cultivated edible plants, of the fruit’s characteristics we’ve embraced and discarded over time. The strawberry’s flavor, and scent, is a multidimensional idea, concrete and philosophical, historical and sexual, manufactured and inherent."
Follow this link for various locations you can find Edible San Francisco in San Francisco. A few copies will be available at Poulet in Berkeley and by the end of this week you'll find some at Bakesale Betty in Oakland. The magazine is free if you can find it!
But these few issues disappear quickly. To ensure you get your hands on one, the best thing to do is get a subscription. ESF is even available out of the United States!
A little insider tip-- you know those insanely delicious vanilla sugar-roasted strawberries you've had atop Delfina's incredible carnaroli rice pudding?
The recipe is in there!
You come here to this part of the world Shuna.! You taste our organic strawberries. No links to them sadly. Just a very long flight and drive. But I promise you a taste you will remember...
Always a treat to read your posts.

Great article, Shuna. Really enjoyed the revelation about the "seeds". The strawberries I've had so far this spring have been a little uneven-- which can only mean that the best ones are coming!

Deccanheffalump,
I'm sorry to say I don't see India on my horizon, but thanks so much for the invite. it's your mangos I covet though...
Jess,
Thanks! Lucero has some great strawberries but they, too, need a little sugar. Early fruit is always a little sour. Thanks for reading!
