Wow Shuna, all your posts make me want to visit NY (I've never been)! And what are those berry-looking things in your pictures; they look like berries, tomatos....mini watermelons?? Have fun in Portland!

It was indeed AMAZING to be in NYC this time around! I think NY seduced me... or was it That Something in the water?
Susan--
good eye! those are Gooseberries and they do in fact remind me of melon & taste slightly like tomatoes. We don't see them here much, although they grow quite well in NY and New England.
Take your keen eye to the east bay where you may sometimes catch them at Berkeley Bowl or Monterey Market.

Hi Shuna,
I'm glad I finally met you. Thanks for taking my New Orleans post to heart. Would you be interested in going to the next Culinary Corps trip? It was so worth it for me.

GOOSEBERRIES!
they have gooseberries. I have never seen one in CA.
We used to grow gooseberries in our garden when I was growing up and I confess I didn't like them. But I am sure I would now. Especially in a classic fool.

I am abysmally late here with my greetings, my bon voyage (both for your trip home and your trip up to Portland) and my thanks, but oh, Shuna, thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you, for that superb evening with you and Julie and Luisa and Ann and Deb and Jessica and A and Radish at Veselka. I had such a wonderful time; I learned so much from you that night; and heck, I continue to learn much from you every time I click on that line of the bookmark that has your name on it...really, I can't thank you enough.
So...you'll be coming back, when? :)

hey shuna, meant to ask you why you thought grom wasn't worth it? you promised more info!

Ben,
I liked Grom but I did not love it. Not a kind of in love to go out of my way to be on the UWS and spend $5 on about 4 oz. of ice cream.
I was surprised at the intensity of te flavors-- the apricot actually tasted of apricot, but this was only noted because I was in NYC and not in a place where Royal Blenheims are grown.
If you have the money and the time, Grom is the best choice in that neighborhood. But in all honesty I think Il Laboratorio on Orchard street has cleaner flavors and, moreover, textures I find appealing.
I don't know why, but (American) gelato is often times a little too gluey/sticky/chewy for me. I think it gets in the way of concentrating on the actual flavor.
And that price is insane. I know that New Yorkers like the have their special things priced really high (it makes the person able to buy it feel all the more special), but my goodness me, zow.
I would go to Grom again, but I would not make a special trip for it.
