Do you work in the food service field? Manage a restaurant? Cook? Bake? Prep? Butcher? Line cook? Are you a chef? Culinary student?
If you can answer in the positive to any of these, please consider taking 10 minutes to fill out the Star Chefs Salary Survey for 2007. As far as I know this organization is the only one gathering stats in this secretive and confusing area.
People use Google to ask, "How Much Money Do Chefs Make?" millions of times a day. Even though many of those people believe what the culinary schools tell them-- that they're chefs because of their crisp white jacket, and that certificate will make them a chef and they will get paid top dollar to dice carrots, the question IS important. Because, let's face it, paying off a private loan of $50,ooo a few hundred dollars a month at a time, is no easy task on minimum wage.
How many female cooks get paid what male cooks do? What states pay higher wages? Which branches of the food service industry offer health insurance and 401K's? What's the difference between catering and restaurant work? Why work in a hotel or not?
Please take this survey. The more kinds of people who take it the more true the statistics will be. Seriously. It took me 10 minutes. Go. Now.
Even if this is your first job in the industry, you count!
Did the survey, will be very interested to see the results.

Your saying, "Even if this is your first job in the industry, you count!" made me smile. And, so...off to the survey I went.
