at first
it's
brambled, confused, blurry, dynamic
and then
it begins to get clearer. something is coming, to a tree near you.
many somethings are about to happen, and you might be able to smell or feel or see it. bend knees, brush away snow, it's there--- little tiny tight and furled green
green leaves. buds break, bulbs crack, light shifts, leafless branches extend tender reddish newness, perfume seduces from oily pollen. hibernating bears are about to wake up and
they're
very
hungry.
MARCH
!
march arrives quietly. february's in-between-ness brings snow and sun, rain and promise, it is the fence the season straddles. but march?
march is the month where the first day of spring lives.
no matter what anyone says, march delivers.
March First
is definitive.
make no mistake about it from now on.
for we are about to get serious
about bringing you spring on time.
and we could get a little silly too, from the giddyness of playing in new sunshine, taking off layers, letting toes out of bondage. we will eat meals of love and crush, new green oils and verjus, kisses and nibbles, nascent ferns and morels, pea tendrils and whole roasted fava beans! we might have doughnuts for dinner and slow smoked pork shoulder for a midnight snack. there will be star and eye gazing. deep nights will stretch into cool mornings and afternoons will become evenings of ever increasing fractions adding up to a warm day.
yes, it's possible.
look up at the clouds today and tell me you do not see
a March sky.
a sky full of endless possibilities.
it's there,
I promise.
H a p P y M A r c H !
I saw asparagus at Tuesday's market. It somehow felt too early, like I needed to wait for something, to wait for March.

We've had a rough winter in the Midwest. March 1st feels good. Spring will feel even better. As, always thank you for your wonderful words Shuna!

March is totally, without a doubt, the coolest dang month of the year. I've already spent all morning outside (grinning like a proud parent at all of the baby growth on our Denver trees - so cute! you can do it, guys!), and after reading your beautifully written post, I'm ready to head back out for the rest of the afternoon. =) Thanks for sharing these little windows into your life - you are so very lucky! Have a terrific weekend!

A beautiful post indeed. I live in the northeast where we have gotten a total of 98 inches of snow this year. I say a robin last week and about cried I was so happy. I know Spring will come, but your post has made me that much more hopeful. Thank you for such beautiful eloquent posts. I very much enjoy your blog.
