do you recognize my new friend?
she is lovely, isn't she?
new plum of my life.
i breathe you in.
close my eyes.
open.
reach hand out
to behold you, plum.
supple, meltingly tender, sweet
only a hint of acid
almost citrus
or flower,
in perfume.
when ripe, eat with caution, or naked. just before swimming.
do you know of what plum i speak? do you know my lovely? from whence? from where, what geography?
tomorrow, monday august 4
myself and a coupla dozen bakers dozen members will visit the farm where i saw these first. do you belong yet? live in northern california? we have some amazing events planned for fall as well. i'm biased, though, because i'm helping to plan a few of them... email me if you want an application.
our only requirement is that you love to bake.
see you soon?
We live on the East Coast, so we'll just have to live vicariously through you!
Alexis! Don't give up so soon-- you never know what awaits you at a local farmers' market or a friend's yard... ~ Shuna

Your poem reminded me of another one by William Carlos Williams, which I read in English last year. It's called "This Is Just To Say" and goes:
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
I hope you enjoy your plums:)

We sat at the same table at BlogHer, and in a session at the unconference on Sunday. Those tart red plums are my favorite food in all the universe. Thank you for putting that picture on your blog; now I have to run to town and buy some more. That, or drown in my own drool.
Hello Mamacita, thanks for stopping by to comment and drool. What more could I ask for? Happy plum eating... ~ Shuna

I have yet to have a plum this summer. Hopefully I will find them at the Farmer's Market tomorrow evening. I enjoy your blog and am also a member of the Orange Juice Club, though I often substitute grapefruit juice in it's place.

Hi Shuna! I have been away for a while but I'm back loving your blog as always. Plums... oh yes... love them especially now that I know their time is coming to an end. I love that. My love is even stronger this way.
And the Baker's Dozen... remember how I tried to see if I could start a chapter? They emailed me back saying they do not wish to open any more chapters. Bummer...
Hope you are well.
